On this episode of 1K Dream Room, host Will Taylor (@brightbazaar) gives Chioneso’s family living room a ravishing revision with a budget of $1,000 and only one day to complete the transformation. Chioneso’s living room is a versatile space with loads of natural light, making it the perfect backdrop for the multi-functional yet homey abode she desires. In addition to wanting her home to feel less like an office space, Chioneso also wishes to maintain her minimal, modern, and zen-like aesthetic.

First, Will installs a sizable white TV/storage unit that matches the freshly painted walls to maximize storage options without crowding the space. After hanging a small metal coat rack and breezy white curtains, Will adds a contemporary black and white striped rug to the center of the living room between the new storage unit and a new black vegan leather square arm sofa.

When building a room’s color palette, Will recommends using the “60-30-10 rule,” in which the primary color decorates 60% of a space, the secondary color takes up 30%, and the last 10% includes any accent colors.

For Chioneso’s living room, Will used white as a primary color, as seen in the walls, drapes, and tray table next to the sofa. The striped rug, black couch, and art constitute the secondary color, while the accent color is apparent in the various green embellishments, adding a touch of playfulness to the space.

With the room’s color scheme in mind, Will accessorizes the space with an assortment of black, white, and green ornamental objects, while an olive green chair next to a low white, square coffee table gives the living space an additional pop of color.

When it’s time for the big reveal, Chioneso is in awe of the room’s makeover. She is especially taken with her new workspace, the numerous storage options, and the large mirror hanging near the entrance hallway, making the apartment feel more expansive. Altogether, the room’s new use of living and storage space has surpassed Chioneso’s expectations. This bright, airy living room makes full use of the natural light and open layout and will surely help Chioneso and her growing family feel calm in the hustle and bustle of New York City.
