Behind custom-crafted Burmese teak entry gates and lush tropical foliage, on a quiet street in West Palm Beach, Fla., is an alluring midcentury compound, recently updated by Parisian architect Jean Francois Guillosson and designed for sophisticated yet relaxed entertaining.
Created by joining two properties into a single parcel that spans just under an acre, there are two fully renovated houses, along with a plethora of shaded lanais, covered breezeways, and many other outdoor spots to relax and recreate. Towering banyan trees and swaying palms provide shade, ambiance and privacy, while two wet bars and a games room are ready for more raucous times. There is about 4,500 square feet of indoor living space across the various structures, which also includes a swimming pool and a tennis court amid dramatically lit plantings.
Prices for single-family homes in West Palm Beach top out at around $15 million — Redfin shows that only two homes in the 33405 zip code, both of them waterfront, have sold for more in the last five years — so if the Balinese-style spread goes for anywhere near its $22 million asking price, it will set a local record. The property is available via Colleen Hanson at Corcoran.
Contained in a single space, the kitchen, dining area and living room form the heart of the L-shaped main house. There’s also a guest bedroom with private bath, as well as the spacious primary bedroom, which boasts two walk-in closets, a dressing area, and a bifurcated bath that includes a couple’s spa tub and a steam room. A nearby outdoor shower adds to the suite’s sexy vibe.
A separate art studio sits alongside a poolside gazebo with a wet bar, while the guest cottage, linked to the main house by a shared lanai, adds two more en-suite bedrooms and a games room with a pool table and a professional, brass-topped bar. Between the various structures is the freeform pool, which has thick metal walls to protect it from tree roots. There’s also a gas fire pit surrounded by decking.
Burmese teak strip cladding add that Balinese feel throughout the property, and it works particularly well on the bar in the games room and in the master bath. The trio of Tom Dixon pendants over the dining table add a glamorous, more contemporary complement to all the classic midcentury furnishings and light fixtures, such as the flying saucer light by George Nelson in the living room, and the Model 78 dining chairs by Niels O. Moller in the kitchen.
West Palm Beach may have yet to attain the dizzying prices of its much more posh neighbor Palm Beach, but this unique compound just might change that. Just keep the noise down after hours, folks!
